– Carl Rogers

The richer the stimulus in an environment,  the more the opportunity to learn and build up sensory information to help us understand the new world we have entered. Learning to see and identify objects that surround us, learning to communicate verbally and non-verbally, learning the culture and the protocol that goes with it and much much, more.

We are learning machines.

As we grow and master the basics of being a human we can grow in directions of our choosing, specialising and working and participating in areas of life that interest and motivate us we use learning to add to the knowledge or skills that we already have to provide the tools we need to follow the career or life that we choose.

How Does Learning Make a Great IT Professional?

Working with computers and software is all about learning to solve problems.

The more we understand the technologies, the easier it is to know how to apply the necessary solutions. It’s not just about knowing a technology in-depth, it is knowing how to apply the appropriate technology to the required solution. It’s therefore important to pick up new technologies quickly. The more learning and understanding we have of the technologies that we work with the easier it is to solve the problems we come across utilizing whichever is the necessary and appropriate technology.

Understand How You Learn Best

There is always something new to learn, be it languages, software, hardware, frameworks.  Learning as an IT professional, never stops and we have to keep pace with the changes. Maintaining and modifying current systems, building newer systems with technologies that make use of a new way of doing things.

Having the ability to learn and learn quickly can be vital for some IT projects, fortunately, these days there are abundant opportunities to learn whatever it is we need to learn.

We can choose to learn in the manner that most suits us in terms of our learning style and topics.

The 4 main learning styles are:

  1. Visual –  needs time to absorb and likes to take notes.
  2. Audio –  likes to listen to podcasts and read out loud.
  3. Kinesthetic – learn by doing and will need frequent brakes.
  4. Logical –  loves data and uses puzzles to reinforce learning.

The internet provides with websites, videos and documents that can teach us or show us whatever it is we wish to know more about.

Understanding how we best learn and where we can find the information becomes vital.  Being an IT professional means you have to learn how to learn quickly and effectively.

Stay Curious

No matter what we already know there is always more to know and staying curious about the world around us as we grow is vital to sustaining a successful career and a fulfilling life.

Many people working in professional careers not only enjoy but crave to learn more and build and widen their knowledge they understand and enjoy the benefits it brings.

Curious drives these people to take every opportunity that life offers to learn new things. By doing this they develop their minds and by doing this they physically grow their brain.  That’s not the only benefit, Harvard Business Review says that lifelong learning is good for your health, wallet and social life!

Be Patient

Like programming, learning is a process.  Martin Broadwell (1969) perhaps described this learning process best with his 4 stage learning model (now adapted to a 5 stage model).

The learning model goes like this:

1. Unconscious Incompetence – I don’t know that I don’t know.

2. Conscious Incompetence – I know that I do not know and want to improve.

3. Conscious Competence – I know how to do it but I’ve to concentrate on the task.

4. Unconscious Competence – I can do it with ease and habitually.

5. Conscious Unconscious Competence – I can explain how I do it to others with ease.

It’s important to remember that your brain will bounce back and forth from each stage as it learns to process, understand and remember the information. Since the brain is a muscle, it needs repetition in order to strengthen it and most importantly patience![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1296″ img_size=”full”][vc_separator color=”custom” accent_color=”#9f3333″ el_class=”divider” css=”.vc_custom_1609088522417{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp” el_class=”bodyTextBlog” css=”.vc_custom_1609324039714{padding-left: 10px !important;}”]Learning Technology is in the business of helping you to learn all things IT.  Over on our Facebook page, we’re running a FREE 5-week LIVE course: Introduction into computers for the complete beginner.
